We are developing a small, energy-efficient learn-to-swim and water safety centre near Gatehouse of Fleet — on privately donated land, for the long-term benefit of rural families across Dumfries & Galloway.
Why this project matters
The closure of local authority swimming pools across Dumfries & Galloway has left a generation of rural children without access to a basic life skill. Families face long journeys for a single lesson, and demand for teaching far outstrips what is available.
Closed pools, rising need
Fewer local swimming facilities mean longer travel, higher costs, and children missing out on learning a life-saving skill.
Water safety is not optional
In a region shaped by rivers, lochs and coastline, teaching children to be safe around water is a matter of basic wellbeing.
Rural equity
This facility addresses a clear gap in provision, ensuring rural children are not disadvantaged by geography.

Energy is the single biggest risk in operating a swimming pool. Our response is simple: design it out from the start. Renewable heat, smart ventilation and solar power underpin the facility's long-term financial and environmental viability — aligning with Scotland's net-zero ambitions.
Solar PV generation
Roof-mounted solar to power pumps, lighting and air-handling systems — reducing grid dependence and lifetime cost.
Air-source heat pumps
Primary low-carbon heating for both pool water and air, eliminating reliance on gas or oil.
Heat recovery ventilation
Recovers heat from humid air before exhausting it — cutting energy demand by 30–50%.
Insulated envelope & pool cover
High-spec insulation and an automated pool cover minimise overnight heat and evaporative losses.
Funding the project
We are seeking capital support in the range of £500,000–£800,000 to deliver construction, pool systems, mechanical and electrical plant, and on-site renewables. The 25-year peppercorn land lease significantly reduces project risk and capital need.
